President's Message: January 1999

This is my last President's message. By the time you read this the Board
of Directors will have elected new officers and you will have a new President.

I believe that the Chamber has accomplished a great deal this year. We
operated the visitor information center next to the ferry loading lanes.
This was a success, we learned a lot and we can do an even better job with
it next year. We had over 50 businesses participate in our brochure rack
service. This was a new program for the Chamber and one that I feel will
continue to be successful.

The July fourth celebration, under the outstanding leadership of Brenda
Larson, was a big success, and Larry Talbot did a great job as Chairman of
the Christmas activities.

Our new chamber executive, Peter DeLorenzi, is doing a great job. His
skills and enthusiasm will be tremendous assets to us in the coming year.

We will be continuing to seek 2% money from the town and county to fund the
work of the chamber. Please contact your representatives and encourage
them to support the Chamber funding proposals.

I want to thank the members of the board for all of their assistance and
support in making this such a rewarding and enjoyable year. It has been an
honor to serve as the President of the Chamber of Commerce. I look forward
to working with all of you in the coming year.

Dave Baughn

SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION!
The price listed on the membership applications
for including your sales material in the DAILY MAILINGS is incorrectly
listed as a monthly charge. The price stated should reflect the quarterly
charge. This is a very cost-effective way to have your rack card included
in our over 4,000 annual mailings.

This is the last physical monthly newsletter that many of you will receive.
Starting with the February issue, all of our members who have furnished us
with an e-mail address will be notified immediately after our newsletter is
posted to our internet web site at www.sanjuanisland.org. Newsletters will
be posted and archived there as well. This should help the Chamber save
more than $1,500 annually. Rock Island Internet has provided this service
free of charge for our Chamber. Click on it!

Thanks to all of you who sent in your Early Bird renewals. More than 50
members did and they will be eligible for some very special prizes to be
given at our February meeting. We would also like to express a BIG THANKS
to the following restaurants for their contributions to our annual
Christmas party: Bella Luna Italian Ristorante; Kathy's Pie's and Cakes
and Catering; Front Street Ale House and Mi Casita. We'd also like to
express Thanks to the Inn at Friday Harbor for the conference room and also
the great decorating job the staff accomplished on very short notice.

WELCOME ABOARD! New Chamber members this year so far include: Mike & Annie
Adams at Funk n Junk/Islands Auction; Realtors Diane Giesy and Brenda
Larson; and Christina's Carriage Company a horsedrawn carriage service.

Retailers Coop
Retailing business is challenging on this remote island and it makes sense
that we retailers work together to find better and more cost effective
methods to influence customers to shop here. Here is a list of some issues
that we need to consider:

Many business communities work together to help each other achieve success.
We should as well.

What is of interest to you? How about retailing workshops and seminars?

Retailers, let's hear from you!

What's new with your business this year? Let us know and we will let everyone else know on the web.
