President's Message Brenda J. Larson

April's Chamber meeting will be held at The Steak House! Thank you to Don Shepherd and Stuart Andrews! Remember the General Meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.

I have been working on a Calendar of Events, which we will use in mailings and in the brochure rack for this coming season. If you have any event that you think I dont know about, e-mail me at salmonut@rockisland.com. Come to the next meeting and see a sample mock-up of the Calendar. We will be working out the details in the next few months on the up and coming San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce Guide to the San Juans. It will be just a few pages our first year (to be printed in the fall of 1999 for the year 2000 summer season) and we hope to add pages each year. I hope this will take the place of our huge mailing packages, saving on postage as well as doing a better job promoting our members. This new "Guide" committee will meet toward the end of April. I am happy to announce John Dunning, co-owner of Windermere will be working with me to head up this project. I will have a signup sheet at the next meeting for those of you wishing to get involved in this Committee.

Spring is trying to peak at us through those dreadful clouds! Have you noticed that now when the forecast is for a nice weekend the tourists run to the ferryboats to get here and enjoy a sunny weekend in the San Juans? I actually saw the overload lane full recently. Yahoo! The Season is drawing near! Hope to see you all at the next meeting.

Best regards,

Brenda J. Larson, President

As residents of the San Juan Islands, we live in the absolutely best boating area in the entire country. And, therefore, we should have the absolutely best Opening Day in the entire country! This year's Opening Day ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, May 2nd.

After the dinghy race, at 12:15, the USCG will do a demonstration of a helicopter in-water rescue, subject to their not being called out for a real Search and Rescue!

At 1:00 p.m. the traditional boat parade will begin, with boats entered in categories of "Traditional", "Classic" or "Theme". The Classic category is for wooden boats, while boats in the Theme category will be decorated in the style of "San Juan Island Calypso Tropicale". Theme boats are encouraged to sponsor community service organizations to assist in the decorating and crewing of the theme boats. These service organizations will be vying for prize money donated by individuals and businesses in the community. Judging will take place at the Spring Street Landing.

After the parade, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., there will be a party for parade participants and spectators at the Spring Street Landing, with music, food, the award ceremony, and activities for kids and adults, including toy sail boat races, radio controlled boat races, and more! For information on the boat parade or the party at Spring Street Landing, please call Mike Close at 378-5699.

All of these events are open to the public, and everyone is invited to enter the dinghy races, enter the toy boat race, put a boat in the boat parade, host a community service organization on your boat, get your organization to help decorate a boat, or just show up to watch the parade and listen to some great music! Help make this Opening Day as great as our boating area.

May 1, 1999 marks the 33rd annual opening day for the San Juan Historical Museum, showing residents and visitors THE WAY WE WERE! No longer a dilapidated farmhouse with a few artifacts, the Museum has grown to an Historical Village with seven buildings and 700 stories to tell! We'd like you, as well as your family and friends to know what we have to offer: Please join us at one of our Spring Open Houses: Thursday, April 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.; Wednesday, April 14th from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. or Saturday, April 17th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. We'll give you a cup of coffee, a tour of our grounds, a taste of Living History... so you can see THE WAY WE WERE!

Tying into the Festival - RETURN OF THE ORCAS . When the wind stops and the rain ceases, the visitors WILL RETURN! Until then, we all need to stay positive and focus on our upcoming season. With that in mind, an updated schedule of events for the Return of the Orcas Festival for 1999 is available. So far, many additional room nights have been sold by tying into this shoulder season event. Again, we encourage you to do the same! Build a package, create a special sale, whatever helps you get a jump-start on the season. There are over a dozen sponsors so far, the festival has been placed in over 200,000 state publications and will have a write up in Sunset Magazine. In addition, Kenmore Air plans to bring Evening Magazine up prior to the event. If you can be a sponsor at any level, it would help to build shoulder season business, assist The Whale Museum fund The Sound Watch program and have a fun upbeat early season event. If you have any questions, call Colleen or Bill at San Juan Safaris winter office 378-6545 and remember the Marine Activity Center opens May 1 through October 3, at 387-2155 ext. 505, to service your visiting guests. Brochures, souvenir programs, posters available soon.
