Happy Holidays to ALL!

Friday Harbor is again decorated magnificently thanks mostly to the energy and enthusiasm of the Chamber's Christmas Committee. If you haven't noticed their enthusiasm is contagious! I have found myself again this year, looking for reasons to drive to town--just to get a glimpse of the festive decor. Our quaint little town, the holiday lights, the warm glow from the store windows, the Christmas music playing, the annual boat parade, the Santa ship, bringing my family down to watch the tree lighting, to see the live Nativity, greeting my neighbors on the street--all these make cherished memories for years to come. Please take time to enjoy and participate in all the holiday festivities and make some cherished memories for yourself and your loved ones this year.

During the holidays, I reflect back over the year--and what a year we have had! I thought being President would be less work than the 4th of July Committee, or the Christmas Committee--my conclusion is NOT. Every position, depends on people giving a lot of their time and effort.

We have has a successful year--one of the best the Chamber has ever had. This year we started a retail committee, this year's 4th of July Celebration was the best ever, the Christmas Committee has successfully taken over the Business Decorating contest, is encouraging more shopping downtown with all the new festivities and the "Grunge" mystery-clue contest. The Chamber now has an office downtown on Spring Street and two employees--something we have wanted and needed for many years, our membership is up, we have a good relationship with the Lopez and Orcas Chambers, the Business Retention and Expansion Program is under way, our relationship with the town, county and EDC is moving in the right direction, and we have been representing our members concerning various state and local issues. Our members our shakers and movers and it is great to see the big turn outs at our monthly meetings. I have high expectations for the new board, we have some fresh and energetic people coming on board--the year 2000 is looking ver promising!

I want to thank the out-going board members for all their time and hard work. The general populous doesn't realize how much time and effort these individuals have contributed over the past few years--but I do! Thanks you so very much to David Baughn--for going to all the Town Councils meetings, for deciphering legal jargon, for keeping me sand and all his moral support! Thank you to Linda Hemphill for her consistency, her book-keeping skills, whit and laughter--I'll miss you tons! Suzy Campbell, has always been a blast to sit on the board with. Her life is so busy and yet she has given so much of her time--she has always truly cared about promoting our businesses. Good luck to you Suzy--with your new married life! I wish you much happiness. If you see these great volunteers about town, let them know how much they are appreciated.

At our January meeting we will have renewal forms available, plan to renew your membership then! Also, in January, our staff will be sending out membership renewals to all island businesses, this is also a great time to sponsor a fellow business colleague to join the SJI Chamber of Commerce. Call our office for more information on Sponsorship!

As we face a new millennium, and all move on with what life has for each of us...I wish you all a successful new year filled with hope, dreams and happiness.
