Hello fellow Chamber Members,

The 4th. Of July was a success again this year! The addition of the street dance provided another venue for fun as well as bringing potential customers downtown! It can't get any better than to stand on the sidewalk and watch the parade go by. Islanders are always guaranteed to see friends and neighbors ride by, and if you are lucky they'll toss you candy! The Chamber has always enjoyed giving back to the community by way of coordinating the 4th. Of July' festivities and will continue to do so, If you've read the newspapers recently, you know we are asking the community to take over the fundraising of the fireworks. I think this is a great decision, it will take the pressure off the business community who has donated most of the monies each year.

I would like to thank the 4th. Of July committee for all of their hard work and time spent. You did a wonderful job!! A special Thank You to Kathy Johnson, Jeff VanDyke, and Dan Ward, who have been dedicated to this committee for a number of years!

Brenda J Larson

Senator Slade Gorton will visit Friday Harbor

Senator Slade Gorton will visit Friday Harbor on Friday, August 13. He will arrive at noon for a picnic in Sunken Park and will spend the rest of the afternoon meeting with School Board and Administrators, Fishermen, Senior Citizens, Veterans Whale Activists, and Chamber of Commerce members. At the end of the day the Senator and County Commissioner John Evans plan to spend time in downtown Friday Harbor meeting merchants and business people in their stores and offices.

Because of his support and assistance during the Makah whale slaughter, many of the whale groups are looking forward to showing their appreciation for Senator Gorton's efforts on their behalf. At the picnic, the Sea Shepherd Society, Sea Defense Alliance, the Whale Museum, Washington Citizens Coastal Alliance and the San Juan Naturalists Association all plan to present the Senator with their thanks.

After the Picnic, Senator Gorton will meet with Chamber of Commerce members at 3:00 in the basement of the American Legion. Senator Gorton is especially interested in meeting with the business people to discuss their concerns. After the meeting, Commissioner John Evans will accompany the Senator as he visits various businesses in downtown Friday Harbor. If you would like to have the Senator stop by your place of business, contact Minnie Knych at 378-4662 or knych@rockisland.com
